LUKE 4
Jesus’ temptation
1Jesus returned from the Jordan River full of the Holy Spirit, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. 2There he was tempted for forty days by the devil. He ate nothing during those days and afterward Jesus was starving. 3The devil said to him, “Since you are God’s Son, command this stone to become a loaf of bread.”
4Jesus replied, “It’s written, People won’t live only by bread.”
5Next the devil led him to a high place and showed him in a single instant all the kingdoms of the world. 6The devil said, “I will give you this whole domain and the glory of all these kingdoms. It’s been entrusted to me and I can give it to anyone I want. 7Therefore, if you will worship me, it will all be yours.”
8Jesus answered, “It’s written, You will worship the Lord your God and serve only him.”
9The devil brought him into Jerusalem and stood him at the highest point of the temple. He said to him, “Since you are God’s Son, throw yourself down from here; 10for it’s written: He will command his angels concerning you, to protect you 11and they will take you up in their hands so that you won’t hit your foot on a stone.”
12Jesus answered, “It’s been said, Don’t test the Lord your God.” 13After finishing every temptation, the devil departed from him until the next opportunity.
Jesus announces good news to the poor
14Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news about him spread throughout the whole countryside. 15He taught in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.
16Jesus went to Nazareth, where he had been raised. On the Sabbath he went to the synagogue as he normally did and stood up to read. 17The synagogue assistant gave him the scroll from the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because the Lord has anointed me.
He has sent me to preach good news to the poor,
to proclaim release to the prisoners
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to liberate the oppressed,
19 and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.
20He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the synagogue assistant, and sat down. Every eye in the synagogue was fixed on him. 21He began to explain to them, “Today, this scripture has been fulfilled just as you heard it.”
22Everyone was raving about Jesus, so impressed were they by the gracious words flowing from his lips. They said, “This is Joseph’s son, isn’t it?”
23Then Jesus said to them, “Undoubtedly, you will quote this saying to me: ‘Doctor, heal yourself. Do here in your hometown what we’ve heard you did in Capernaum.’” 24He said, “I assure you that no prophet is welcome in the prophet’s hometown. 25And I can assure you that there were many widows in Israel during Elijah’s time, when it didn’t rain for three and a half years and there was a great food shortage in the land. 26Yet Elijah was sent to none of them but only to a widow in the city of Zarephath in the region of Sidon. 27There were also many persons with skin diseases in Israel during the time of the prophet Elisha, but none of them were cleansed. Instead, Naaman the Syrian was cleansed.”
28When they heard this, everyone in the synagogue was filled with anger. 29They rose up and ran him out of town. They led him to the crest of the hill on which their town had been built so that they could throw him off the cliff. 30But he passed through the crowd and went on his way.
Jesus in Capernaum
31Jesus went down to the city of Capernaum in Galilee and taught the people each Sabbath. 32They were amazed by his teaching because he delivered his message with authority.
33A man in the synagogue had the spirit of an unclean demon. He screamed, 34“Hey! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are. You are the holy one from God.”
35“Silence!” Jesus said, speaking harshly to the demon. “Come out of him!” The demon threw the man down before them, then came out of him without harming him.
36They were all shaken and said to each other, “What kind of word is this, that he can command unclean spirits with authority and power, and they leave?” 37Reports about him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.
38After leaving the synagogue, Jesus went home with Simon. Simon’s mother-in-law was sick with a high fever, and the family asked Jesus to help her. 39He bent over her and spoke harshly to the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and served them.
40When the sun was setting, everyone brought to Jesus relatives and acquaintances with all kinds of diseases. Placing his hands on each of them, he healed them. 41Demons also came out of many people. They screamed, “You are God’s Son.” But he spoke harshly to them and wouldn’t allow them to speak because they recognized that he was the Christ. 42When daybreak arrived, Jesus went to a deserted place. The crowds were looking for him. When they found him, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43But he said to them, “I must preach the good news of God’s kingdom in other cities too, for this is why I was sent.” 44So he continued preaching in the Judean synagogues.
LUKE 5
Jesus calls disciples
1One day Jesus was standing beside Lake Gennesaret when the crowd pressed in around him to hear God’s word. 2Jesus saw two boats sitting by the lake. The fishermen had gone ashore and were washing their nets. 3Jesus boarded one of the boats, the one that belonged to Simon, then asked him to row out a little distance from the shore. Jesus sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. 4When he finished speaking to the crowds, he said to Simon, “Row out farther, into the deep water, and drop your nets for a catch.”
5Simon replied, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night and caught nothing. But because you say so, I’ll drop the nets.”
6So they dropped the nets and their catch was so huge that their nets were splitting. 7They signaled for their partners in the other boat to come and help them. They filled both boats so full that they were about to sink. 8When Simon Peter saw the catch, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Leave me, Lord, for I’m a sinner!” 9Peter and those with him were overcome with amazement because of the number of fish they caught. 10James and John, Zebedee’s sons, were Simon’s partners and they were amazed too.
Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid. From now on, you will be fishing for people.” 11As soon as they brought the boats to the shore, they left everything and followed Jesus.
A man with a skin disease
12Jesus was in one of the towns where there was also a man covered with a skin disease. When he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and begged, “Lord, if you want, you can make me clean.”
13Jesus reached out his hand, touched him, and said, “I do want to. Be clean.” Instantly, the skin disease left him. 14Jesus ordered him not to tell anyone. “Instead,” Jesus said, “go and show yourself to the priest and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses instructed. This will be a testimony to them.” 15News of him spread even more and huge crowds gathered to listen and to be healed from their illnesses. 16But Jesus would withdraw to deserted places for prayer.
Jesus heals a paralyzed man
17One day when Jesus was teaching, Pharisees and legal experts were sitting nearby. They had come from every village in Galilee and Judea, and from Jerusalem. Now the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal. 18Some men were bringing a man who was paralyzed, lying on a cot. They wanted to carry him in and place him before Jesus, 19but they couldn’t reach him because of the crowd. So they took him up on the roof and lowered him—cot and all—through the roof tiles into the crowded room in front of Jesus. 20When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”
21The legal experts and Pharisees began to mutter among themselves, “Who is this who insults God? Only God can forgive sins!”
22Jesus recognized what they were discussing and responded, “Why do you fill your minds with these questions? 23Which is easier—to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24But so that you will know that the Human Onehas authority on the earth to forgive sins”—Jesus now spoke to the man who was paralyzed,“I say to you, get up, take your cot, and go home.” 25Right away, the man stood before them, picked up his cot, and went home, praising God.
26All the people were beside themselves with wonder. Filled with awe, they glorified God, saying, “We’ve seen unimaginable things today.”
Jesus calls a tax collector
27Afterward, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at a kiosk for collecting taxes. Jesus said to him, “Follow me.”
28Levi got up, left everything behind, and followed him. 29Then Levi threw a great banquet for Jesus in his home. A large number of tax collectors and others sat down to eat with them. 30The Pharisees and their legal experts grumbled against his disciples. They said, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
31Jesus answered, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor, but sick people do. 32I didn’t come to call righteous people but sinners to change their hearts and lives.”
The old and the new
33Some people said to Jesus, “The disciples of John fast often and pray frequently. The disciples of the Pharisees do the same, but your disciples are always eating and drinking.”
34Jesus replied, “You can’t make the wedding guests fast while the groom is with them, can you? 35The days will come when the groom will be taken from them, and then they will fast.”
36Then he told them a parable. “No one tears a patch from a new garment to patch an old garment. Otherwise, the new garment would be ruined, and the new patch wouldn’t match the old garment. 37Nobody pours new wine into old wineskins. If they did, the new wine would burst the wineskins, the wine would spill, and the wineskins would be ruined. 38Instead, new wine must be put into new wineskins. 39No one who drinks a well-aged wine wants new wine, but says, ‘The well-aged wine is better.’”
